Marie and Scott

Have you ever gone to lunch with someone that both intrigued and infuriated you?

That's exactly how this friendship started.

Some people go to the gym twice a week for a workout. Marie and I went to Mac's Diner, ordered a meat-n-three and picked a random topic to debate.

"Let the sparring begin."

And it didn't matter what the subject was as long as we were on opposing sides. Sometimes I'd win, sometimes Marie would. But the mental workout was always end-game.

Ground Zero

One day I showed Marie a 9 page short story I'd written about an oppressive government in an alternate reality future (pretty sure I had Brazil knocking around in the back of my head at that time). And almost immediately, she formulated a timeline in her head and started explaining what would happen next.

"We can get together once a week. Flush out the characters and build their backstories. Then work out the rest of the outline and start assigning chapter writing assignments."

And after my initial shock -- I said, "Sure, that sounds great."

Never having a thought in my head that almost a year later, we'd be looking at a 460 page, 120,000 word manuscript.

That was the Halcyon Project.
