Victim Attitude Syndrome
I used to teach a class at work, during the 90s when all the corporate take-over and merger stuff was going on.
Basically, it just said to focus on what you can and don't make such a big deal out of the "I can't"s.
| SYMPTOM | CURE |
|---|---|
| “I can’t do my job because . . .” | “Let me figure out how I can . . .” |
| It’s not my fault | How could I affect change |
| Place Blame | Take *Responsibility |
| Constantly make excuses | Catch yourself before making excuses |
| Avoid engaging | Look for a solution (somewhere) |
| It’s not my job | It’s not my job, but I’ll certainly try to help |
*Responsibility
For most of us, this is absolutely a learned and need-to-practice behaviour. We don't naturally bring it to the table.
So, initially, it takes a concerted effort to start doing it. But what you'll find, in rather short order, is how absolutely empowering it can be.
Take it for a spin and see. What do you have to lose?
