Dependence

Synopsis

A nasty computer virus, lay dormant for years before awakening and quietly beginning to spread. Initially showing up as unexplainable problems and system crashes.

Early on, it shows up in different places, causing different symptoms in different ways. So, it doesn’t look like any of them were related.

But, over time, the annoyances become increasingly more severe and more frequent. Eventually moving past near-disaster events and onto total system shut downs and catastrophic failures.

And, as IT professionals across the planet, try in vein to come to grips with the growing threat a pattern begins to emerge.

Unlike the typical, run of the mill, hacker produced viruses, this one seems to have something more to it. Almost like some kind of intelligence.

Similar to a biological virus, it is capable of adapting to its environment. It moves around and mutates in response to threats.

Meaning that with each system it infects, it gets stronger - and smarter.

Eventually--too late--we learned that it was using the power grid to travel while it silently infected every system out there.
